What is Leadership?
A leader is someone who directs a team or organization toward a specific goal or mission. Within an organization, leaders set standards of what is expected – they not only hold their employees accountable but they hold themselves accountable as well. Setting the tone for your employees is crucial in the overall performance and success of a workplace.
Leadership is all about behavior – it’s not a position.
- Leaders inspire people to live by the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Leaders don’t tell people what to do – they empower people to make decisions that support the vision of the organization.
- Leaders make sure that all members of their organization, at every level, know their contributions are appreciated and valued.
- Leaders lead – through communication, action, and hard work. Leading by example will go much farther than hypocritical behavior.
- Leadership is often learned. Being a high performer and taking responsibility are two key traits of a leader, but are not traits that someone is necessarily born with. A person who strives to improve is someone who can become a leader.
- Management is not always synonymous with leadership.
