HR Hot Topics – July, 2023: Understanding the CROWN Act

Welcome to July’s edition of HR Hot Topics! I thought I’d take a break from sightseeing in Italy to share with you this month’s video – which has to do with racial or ethnic identity. On June 15th, Governor Whitmer signed the CROWN Act into law, which enhances Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act by prohibiting hair-based discrimination.

 

The Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act expands the definition of race as a protected classification to include “traits historically associated with race, including, but not limited to, hair texture and protective hairstyles.” Michigan follows 20 other states that have adopted similar legislation.
