Hello Leaders, Welcome to August’s edition of HR Hot Topics! This month we bring you the new I-9 form and we explore recent verification rule changes made to the I-9 process. If you have hired new employees since March 20, 2020 – you’ll want to pay attention to this update! The COVID-era flexibility to exam I-9 employee documents remotely has come to an end. Employers now have until August 30, 2023, to physically inspect all documents that had been examined remotely. An alternative method of examination has recently been approved for those employers using E-verify, assuming certain criteria are met. See below for an article outlining both options.
If you have already done physical examinations of all new employee documents, you are in the clear. However, if you employ remote workers and did not see their employee documents in-person at the time of hire, you will have some work to do before August 30th.
